In smoothening,the products act at the root of your hair..helping to reduce frizz and makes it more softer and managable.(it does not really make hair straight)Also very little heat is applied in smoothening,which is why it causes less damage,however the benfits are just for a short time.
In straightening, lots of chemicals and heat is used..which certainly causes a lot of damage to the texture of the hair..How ever it will last longer than smoothening..but the tips become straight and pointed..which looks very unnatural!
If you like your hair type then i would suggest going for smoothening rather than straightening :) if you want to change your hair type from super curly to straight,go for straightening! Hope that helps vaisakh :)

Last time I went to a beauty clinic, the guy there suggested me to straighten my hair.. When I said I was concerned about it damaging my hair, he told to do smoothening instead. Frankly, I could not make out any difference between the two after he showed me pictures of both. Is there any difference? And most of all, is it safe for the hair to do straightening/smoothening?

Here are two products I would suggest for you: Boots Bergamot shampoo and himalayas protein shampoo..

Stay away from conditioners if you have really oily hair!
